I don't think I could have resonated with this month's post more, especially Helen's story of leaving a tenured academic job and starting fresh. I've just made the decision a few weeks ago to move back to the US after more than 15 years living abroad and with no job prospects ahead. Even though this Risk won't be undertaken for another few months while I finish this semester in my current role, I already have a lot of anxiety about it. I'm still an early career scholar (I hope), and it does feel right to be closer to my family, but I can only hope that this move will mean more positive than negative change. Your timely and inspired message is reminding me that I'm not alone. Thank you!

I'm a bit off my journaling game this month but getting back to basics and practice. As such, I just got around to diving into this month's post.

I am applying for a position this week that was never, ever, on my radar screen. 🤪 The metaphor of placing my heart on a sleeve a bit further out certainly resonates with pulling my application together. And brings to mind my favorite Mary Chapin Carpenter song, This Shirt. Which ya'll are all too young to know but I will leave you with. . . . .

"This shirt's got silver buttons

And a place upon the sleeve

Where I used to set my heart up

Right there anyone could see"

My dad loves MCC so I grew up hearing her music! Still probably know every word of that song. :) Happy journaling & best wishes with your application!

I'm considering if I should wear "my" shirt while writing. I have the bat wing sleeve disaster I wore to all the junior high dances . . . .
